Title: Topology in magnetism on the nanoscale

Abstract:
The orientation of magnetic moments is widely used to encode information in data storage devices. The atomic magnetic moments or spins align in exotic spin configurations such as domain walls, vortices, skyrmions or hopfions in many materials. Despite their typical sizes in the nanometer range, these spin configurations are often very robust, and their stability is rooted in their topological properties. Such topological spin structures have attracted considerable research attention recently due to their proposed applications in conventional and unconventional computing architectures.
Here, we discuss some recent results on topological spin configurations. We investigate the thermal stability of various types of magnetic skyrmions based on the magnetic interactions stabilizing them [1,2]. Skyrmions may be treated as quasiparticles forming thermodynamic phases, where their dynamics is strongly influenced by their topological charge [3]. In strongly anisotropic systems, unique types of magnetic domain walls may form, which transform into chains of skyrmions under applying an external magnetic field [4].
