Abstract:
The interaction of few-cycle laser pulses with matter has attracted
considerable interest as increasingly shorter pulses became available. A
theoretical study of atomic single ionization driven by a linearly
polarized short laser pulse within the single electron approximation will
be presented. A simple semiclassical analysis of the interference pattern
in the angular distribution can be performed in the tunneling regime: The
electron released with low momentum experiences interference processes
displaying a near-threshold axial shape structure. A simple universal
classical formula that predicts the dominant angular momentum for
tunnel-ionized slow electrons propagating in the combined Coulomb and
laser fields is found. I will also show recent investigations on the
effect of the Coulomb potential of the atomic core on the dynamics of the
detached electron.
