CSFK CSI SZEMINÁRIUM / KONKOLY OBSERVATORY SEMINAR
Date: May 15 (Thursday) 14:00
Szabolcs Mészáros (ELTE Gothard Asztrofizikai Obszervatórium; Hungary):
The chemical mapping of the Milky Way
In this talk we give an overview of the work of the MTA-ELTE Lendulet Milky
Way Research group within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The SDSS-V
Milky Way Mapper (MWM) survey will create the largest chemical map of our
Galaxy by observing 5 million stars by 2027. MWM has observed 2 million stars
to date, about 1 million will be made public in the first data release (DR19)
of MWM in the Summer of 2025. Our group was leading the
calibration/validation effort within SDSS for this data release.
Using private DR19 data, we have modelled the evolution of 15 elements (Fe,
Mg, O, Si, S, Ca, Ti, Na, Al, K, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni) in the entire Milky Way,
but also divided the Galaxy into six regions based on the distance from the
galactic center and modeled each of them separately. We successfully
replicated the observed chemical makeup of the Milky Way by assuming two gas
inflow events, one at the formation of our Galaxy and one roughly 4 billion
years later, which was likely a merger event with another galaxy.
Our group is also leading several projects related to theoretical
spectroscopy, including the calculation of the synthetic spectrum database
used for the flux calibration of the James Webb Space Telescope.
