"Applications of dynamical systems theory to
excitable ocean systems"

In this seminar, several applications of dynamical
systems theory to two nonlinear ocean systems are
presented and discussed. The first system (SWM)
is based on the shallow water equations of
geophysical fluid dynamics, while the second (LOM)
is based on a low-order (four-dimensional) spectral
quasigeostrophic model. Despite their profound
difference, both models are excitable, yielding
relaxation oscillations that can be either excitable
or self-sustained depending on the parameter range
considered. The corresponding phenomenology shares,
therefore, important similarities with the abrupt
changes observed in the climate system. The seminar
is divided into two parts. In the first part, aspects
of ocean dynamics are investigated in the framework
of both autonomous and nonautonomous dynamical systems
theory; in the latter case, particular attention is
devoted to the concept of snapshot/pullback attractor.
In the second part, some analyses of deterministic
and stochastic tipping points arising in nonautonomous
versions of LOM are discussed.
