WIGNER SZFI Seminar
Physics without Top and Bottom: Granular Matter in Weightlessness
Matthias Sperl
Institut für Materialphysik im Weltraum; Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität zu Köln (host: Börzsönyi Tamás)
Tuesday, 4 June 2019 10:00, KFKI Campus, Bldg. 1, 2nd floor, Conference Room
One of the central questions in the field of granular materials is whether fluidized granular media in microgravity take steady states which are close to thermal equilibrium. Laboratory experiments on the ground, however, are subject to gravity, resulting in, e.g., sedimentation, pressure gradients, or inhomogeneities. To experimentally study zero-gravity conditions, one can employ parabolic flight, drop tower, sounding rocket, and the International Space Station. The talk shall review how for different densities -- granular gases, fluids and packings -- the measurements in weightlessness are conducted and to what new insights they lead. For granular gases, homogeneous states can be investigated; for granular fluids, larger fluctuations are detected; and for granular solids, the continued evolution of the respective packings can be monitored.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
