"Non-collinear spin configurations in ultrathin films"

Spin spiral and skyrmion lattice states were found in the
last few years in several mono- and double-layer magnetic films
deposited on nonmagnetic substrates. Certain experimental methods
such as spin-polarized scanning tunnelling microscopy enable
the observation of spin configurations in real space. We study
these systems by using a spin model Hamiltonian with interactions
determined from ab initio calculations. Theoretical calculations
based on the spin wave spectrum at finite temperature are compared
to spin dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. Examples are shown
for spin spiral states in Fe/Ta(110) and skyrmion lattice phase
in Pd/Fe/Ir(111).
