"Weyl semimetals from topological insulators"

Topological phases of matter have recently become the objects of
intense study in condensed matter physics. Among these novel phases
are topological insulators, which have a band gap in the bulk like
normal insulators, but support topologically-protected surface states
in the gap. At the transition point between the normal and the
topological insulator phases, the band gap in the bulk vanishes.
If the time-reversal or the inversion symmetry is broken, this
transition point can be turned into a transition phase - the Weyl
semimetal phase - that is characterized by band touching points at
the Fermi level. In our research, we proposed a time-reversal-invariant
realization of the Weyl semimetal phase, using both a simplified
superlattice model and a realistic tight-binding model describing a
concrete heterostructure. The most important physical properties of
this phase are a strongly anisotropic conductivity and partially-
present surface states.
