Optimal Quantum Control of
Bose-Einstein condensates in magnetic microtraps


Confined atom interferometers using Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) offer new prospects for matter wave interferometry and precision measurements. In this talk, I theoretically investigate the limitations of such atom interferometers and explore the possibility to improve the performance by means of optimal control theory (OCT). Within the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, simulation of splitting and trapping of the condensate are presented. Atom number squeezing and the resulting phase diffusion are investigated within the framework of a generic two-mode model and the multi-configurational Hartree method for Bosons (MCTDHB). Our results show that optimized control strategies allow for efficient condensate trapping and number squeezing on short time scales.
