CSFK CSI SZEMINÁRIUM / KONKOLY OBSERVATORY SEMINAR

Date: Mar 12 (Thursday) 14:00

Bogdán Ákos (Harvard & Smithsonian, Center for Astrophysics, USA)
Illuminating Supermassive Black Holes and Protoclusters in the First Billion
Years of the Universe

In the first billion years, the Universe built its first giants with
remarkable efficiency: black holes reaching unexpectedly large masses, and
the earliest cluster progenitors assembling into massive halos. JWST is now
uncovering an abundance of high-redshift galaxies as well as rare
concentrations of galaxies at z > 5, while the Chandra X-ray Observatory
provides a unique view of black hole accretion and faint, extended X-ray
emission from hot gas. In this talk, I will show how combining Chandra and
JWST data acts as a force multiplier in the era of cosmic dawn. I will
present the detection of gravitationally lensed AGN at z ~ 10 that directly
probe early supermassive black hole seeding and rapid growth, including
sources that can remain hidden from JWST when the nucleus is heavily
obscured. I will also highlight evidence for hot gas in a protocluster at z ~
5.7, offering a unique window into massive halo assembly at early times.
Together, these results show that we are now directl
y directly witnessing early supermassive black hole growth and the buildup
of the first massive environments, providing a new view of the origins of
supermassive black holes and the progenitors of galaxy clusters.
