András Péter Joó (Konkoly Observatory): Mechanical design for the cold optics
of NOTT, a nulling interferometer for VLTI
ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) has long been at the
forefront of astrophysical research and instrumentation. Its new visitor
instrument suite, Asgard, representing a leap forward in capabilities, will
offer high angular resolution and high contrast imaging. Among its four
natively collaborating instruments is NOTT, a nulling interferometer
dedicated to imaging nearby young giant exoplanets in the L’ band (3.5-4.0
microns), with its cold optics designed to operate at 90K. We present the
mechanical design for NOTT's cold optics, encompassing the mounting for
collimation, polarization, and imaging, along with a preliminary mount design
for the detector. One of its main challenges is to ensure optimal alignment
at the operating temperature and achieve precise focus at the detector plane.
A critical requirement is to avoid stress on optical elements during and
after the cooling process, to maintain their geometry within tolerances. Our
devised system exerts minimal f
orce to maintain axial alignment of the optics while facilitating necessary
adjustments to achieve focal precision at the detector plane.
