CSFK CSI SZEMINÁRIUM / KONKOLY OBSERVATORY SEMINAR

Date: Mar 27 (Thursday) 14:00

Gábor Marton (Konkoly Observatory; Hungary):
The project NEMESIS: machine learning techniques to understand star formation

NEMESIS (Novel Evolutionary Model for the Early Stages of stars with
Intelligent Systems) was a 4 year long EU H2020 project launched in March
2021, with the involvement of 3 institutes: Konkoly, the University of
Geneva, and the University of Vienna. It had the goal to improve our
understanding of star formation and early stellar evolution with the help of
machine learning (ML) techniques. These techniques were more frequently used
in other fields of astronomy, and NEMESIS was groundbreaking in using them to
the study of early stages of star formation. I will summarise the results of
the project with special attention to all the topics where NEMESIS
successfully applied computer vision, ML regression, dimension reduction,
supervised and unsupervised techniques, and also deep learning during the
different phases of the project. I give details about the new Herschel/PACS
point source catalog, the most complete catalog of young stars collected, the
source removal tool, the unsupervised
morphological classification of Young Stellar Objects, and the creation of
a new, deep learning YSO catalogue.

The seminar will be held live in the Detre hall with audience, but also
streamed online via Zoom. If you are unable to attend the presentation in
person, you can join us via this link
