Chemical Mapping of the Milky Way
One of the most intriguing questions of astronomy is how our Galaxy
formed and evolved during its nearly 13 billion year lifetime. Answering
this question is possible only by studying the chemical
composition of all the sub-systems of the Milky Way, the thin
and thick disk, and the Galactic bulge and halo. Our goal is to create
the largest chemical map of the Milky Way to date and use
this information to uncover the history of our Galaxy. We wish to
achieve this goal through a robust science project using both private
and public data from the Milky Way Mapper (MWM) high-resolution
spectroscopic survey part of the 5th iteration of the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V). PI Mészáros is the abundance working
group leader within the team of MWM until the end
of the SDSS-V project in 2025. MWM will observe nearly 5 million stars
and will derive accurate atmospheric parameters and
chemical abundances for all them allowing the mapping of our Milky Way
in unprecedented detail.
