Subject: PETRA IV workshops at DESY in 2017 ? Invitation

Dear Colleagues,

As you may have heard already, DESY plans for the conversion of PETRA III 
into an ultra-low emittance storage ring PETRA IV, aiming at diffraction 
limited X-ray emission in the range of 10 keV. The reduced emittance of the 
electron beam compared to PETRA III will yield beams of hard X-rays with 
unprecedented coherence properties that can be focused to dimensions in the 
nanometre-regime in both horizontal and vertical directions.
The outstanding transverse coherence of the PETRA IV beams will facilitate to 
observe correlations in materials over a wide range of length scales, while 
the ultrasmall focal sizes will reveal structure and dynamics in the 
nanometre range. Combined with diffraction methods in the same setup, one 
obtains a revolutionary scale-bridging approach covering a wide range of 
spatial dimensions to tackle essential open questions in all of the natural 
and engineering sciences.
An exciting future of research with synchrotron radiation enabled by PETRA IV 
lies ahead of us!
To explore with you the new scientific opportunities at this facility we are 
organizing a series of workshops in 2017. The results of these workshops will 
contribute to ensure optimum experimental conditions at PETRA IV, planned to 
become operational by 2026. Moreover, the scientific cases discussed together 
with potential future users will be an essential part of the PETRA IV 
conceptual design report, to be compiled by us until spring 2018.
