The functional renormalization group:
an overview and some applications

Kivonat:
We are going to discuss briefly the functional formalism in Quantum Field
Theories. Then, we will have a short recap of the Wilsonian idea of the
renormalization group through an example. The main idea of the functional
renormalization group (FRG) will be presented and we will derive the
Wetterich equation that governs the flow of the effective action of the
theory. The whole machinery is going to be applied to the O(N) symmetric
vector models (that can be identified as various spin models) using the
local potential approximation, which essentially gives exact result in the
large-N limit. For the finite N O(N) models the polynomial expansion of the
effective potential is an efficient approximation to extract the physical
content of the theory, however, fake fixed point solutions show up, which
will be shown how to distinguished from the real ones. The computation of
critical exponents will be also mentioned.
