"A Review of International Weather Research Projects"

This presentation will review the major accomplishments of the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO) sponsored 10-year The Observing system
Research and Predictability EXperiment (THORPEX) program that ended in 2014.
THORPEX aimed at the acceleration of improvements in the skill and use of 1-14
day high impact weather forecasts. Recently, the World Weather Research
Program (WWRP) of WMO launched three legacy projects focusing on remaining
major challenges in weather forecasting: the Polar Prediction Project (PPP),
the
Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction project (S2S), and the High Impact Weather
(HIWeather) project. The objectives of these projects overlap with several US
research and development initiatives such as the Earth System Prediction
Capability (ESPC) and its operational counterpart, the National Unified
Operational Prediction Capability (NUOPC), and the Weather Ready Nation
(WRN). Coordination across the various projects will be discussed, as well as
initiatives such as EarthCube (led by the US National Science foundation -
NSF)
that will facilitate successful participation in WWRP weather research
projects.
