Abstract:

In this talk I review the  physical background of the Hanbury Brown --
Twiss  (HBT)  experiment.  I  present  the  motivation  and the first
results.  I also show what kind  of new ideas emerged in the effort of
explaining the experimental results.  I highlight how these ideas have
been exploited from the sixties until today.
