"Molecular vibrations, from the spectrum to the motion
of the atoms"
Abstract:
A strategy is presented for the analysis of highly excited
vibrations of small polyatomic molecules. First, starting from the
experimentally measured spectrum an effective algebraic
Hamiltonian is constructed. Second, its eigenfunctions in
angle space representation are classified according to their
localization properties. The various classes of states correspond
to various coupling schemes between the original modes of
vibration. In addition, for each class an assignment by quantum numbers
related to the respective coupling scheme is obtained. Finally,
the type of atomic motion is reconstructed which carries the
various individual vibrational states. This program also
worked quite well in many cases where the corresponding
classical dynamics is mainly chaotic. Therefore the success of
this strategy leads to interesting comments on quantum chaology.
