Abstract:
The start of the new solar cycle (this time coinciding with the start of
a new Chinese 12-year cycle) prompts us to wonder what it will be like?
Strong or weak, long or short? There are sharply conflicting predictions
concerning the behaviour of solar activity in the next few years, based
on different models of the solar dynamo and on empirical relationships.
To what extent is the long-term variation of solar activity
characterized by regularities, chaotic or stochastic behaviour, and to
what extent can it be predicted? In the talk I give a brief review of
this subject, then I present a possible new mechanism for the origin of
grand minima of solar activity within the framework of the interface
dynamo scenario.
