Dear colleagues,

With this message I would like to bring to your attention that the European
Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*) at
Trento is planning a doctoral training programme on "Nuclear structure and
reactions". It will be run in the spirit of previous programmes of this type
at
ECT*, with daily lectures by recognized experts as well as one-week workshops.
The scheduled lecturers and lectures are Franco Iachello (Symmetries in
nuclei),
Stuart Pittel (Mean-field methods in nuclei and beyond), Nathal Severijns
(Nuclear aspects of fundamental symmetries), Yorick Blumenfeld/Elias Khan
(Nuclear physics with exotic beams), Morten Hjorth-Jensen (Nuclear shell
model),
Jeff Tostevin (Nuclear reaction theory), Marek Ploszajczak (Many-body open
quantum systems) and Karlheinz Langanke (Nuclear astrophysics). Each lecturer
will have one week to develop his subject in detail.

Students will have ample opportunity to interact with the lecturers outside
the
formal lecture period and in addition ECT* staff will be on hand to assist in
tutorials and problem sessions. Participants will have access to the computing
facilities of ECT* and will be given the time and opportunity to continue work
on their PhD project.

This programme should be viewed as a unique opportunity for students who are
completing a PhD thesis in theoretical or experimental nuclear physics to
acquire a broad education in this field. I would be grateful if you could
advertise this programme in your department and, in particular, inform PhD
students that could benefit from it. The ECT* will pay the local expenses of a
restricted number of students for the entire three-month period of the
programme.

More details, including on how to apply to the programme can be found at the
ECT* website http://www.ect.it/ under doctoral training programme 2007.
With best regards,

Piet Van Isacker
