Lund University announces 7-9 PhD studentships in High Energy Physics

Thanks to a grant (019629) from the European Commission, the Departments of Physics and Theoretical Physics at Lund University, Sweden, announce seven PhD studentships in High Energy Physics.

Reference number: N B 21 69/2006 Appointment start: 1 October 2006

General information: Torsten Åkesson, tel. +46 708 102 873, Torsten.Akesson AT hep.lu.se

Application form: http://www.naturvetenskap.lu.se/fou/antagn_blankett_eng.pdf

The selected students will enter a dedicated graduate school with courses, complementary training and supervised research. The courses comprise a minimum of 60 ECTS advanced level courses (transfer of credits for advanced level courses obtained at other academic institutions is possible), and complementary training such as communication, entrepreneurship and management.

The orientation for the supervised research in High Energy Physics can be chosen by the student after some time has been spent on the initial training. The possible areas are experimental or phenomenological research related to physics at the energy frontier (ATLAS), heavy ion collisions (ALICE, PHENIX), and electron-proton interactions (H1). Inter-disciplinary research and detector development is also possible.

The requirement for admission to postgraduate studies is that you have obtained, at the time when the appointment starts, a Master's degree or equivalent in physics (four years of undergraduate studies including the equivalent of two years of physics and including a 30 ECTS (half a year) Diploma Work) from a recognized university.

Seven positions are part of the EC Marie Curie Actions, the Mobility-2 programme. Eligible students are nationals of EU Member States, EU Associated States, or third countries, with a majority coming from Member and/or Associated States. Holders of a Swedish citizenship are not eligible for these seven positions, unless they are expatriates. In addition one or two positions may be funded by Lund University, pending on available funding, and these can be applied to by holders of any nationality, including Swedes.

Applications should be made by using the application form, including a personal statement with motivation for the chosen subject of study, an attested list of grades, a CV, and if possible a copy of your Diploma Work. You should give the reference number 69 in your application. The applicant should also arrange to have at least two letters of recommendation sent separately. It is important to explain the grading system and to define the level of courses taken. The criterion for selection is the student's estimated ability to perform well in postgraduate studies. In the case of equal merits secondary criteria based on improving the gender-balance and recruitment from the less favoured regions as defined by the Community will be used.

Postgraduate positions are awarded for 1+1+1+1 years, with an evaluation after the first and second years.

The signed application and the reference letters should reach:
