Cim: Planck:imaging anisotropies and the polarisation of the
cosmic microwave background.
Abstract:
Planck is the European Space Agency's mission to obtain an all sky
image of the anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background with a
resolution as small as 5 arcmin and with a sensitivity set by the sky
backgrounds. The satellite will be launched in 2007. Planck is
equipped with two instruments based on different detector
technologies, to cover the sky in 9 frequency bands ranging from 30 to
850 GHz, 7 of which have polarisation detection capabilities. An
overview will be given of the spacecraft, its payload and the
envisaged operations, in the light of the present status of the
development. The scientific capabilities of Planck will be
unprecedented enabling the study of fundamental cosmological
questions. I will discuss the present status of the observational
cosmology and the envisaged contribution by Planck.
