Evolution of field discontinuites at the example of the BURGERS-equation
Abstract:
On the example of the so called BURGERs equation, a simple
nonlinear partial differential equation, the following phenomena
are investigated: Continuous initial conditions can lead to
discontinuous solutions at later times (evolution of shocks).
Shock solutions are weak solutions of the differential equation,
and fulfill the HUGONIOT jump condition. This determines the
velocity of the shock front. However, in order to decide, if a
shock occurs or not, an additional criterion is needed, the so
called LAX entropy condition.
