On blessed memory of Igor P. Suzdalev

With the extreme sorry and deepest sadness we announce the passing of Igor P. Suzdalev, the Russian representative to IBAME, Professor of the Institute of Chemical Physics in Russian Academy of Sciences, who died suddenly from myocardial infarction on 08 February 2012.

Igor P. Suzdalev was born in Moscow on September 04, 1938. He graduated from the Moscow Engineering-Physics Institute in 1962. He defended his PhD thesis in 1965 and the Doctoral thesis in 1976. In 1983, he became Professor of the Institute of Chemical Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences, and in 2001 he accepted the position of Professor of the Department of Material Sciences in Moscow State University.

Professor Igor P. Suzdalev is a world-wide famous scientist in the field of nanotechnology, nanodiagnostics, nanoclusters and nanostructures, in physical chemistry of surface and heterostructures. He discovered and investigated new size-effects in nanoclusters and nanosystems including unusual magnetic properties, solid-liquid and metal-insulator transitions. He fulfilled pioneer studies of dynamic structure of globular proteins applying the Mossbauer spectroscopy. He developed the applications of Mossbauer methods in investigations of dynamics of elemental acts and phase transitions in chemical reactions, absorption, catalysis, and worked out the Rayleigh scattering of Mossbauer radiation for studying the intramolecular dynamics of macromolecules and proteins.

He published four books and over four hundred papers. His last book .Electrical and magnetic transitions in nanoclusters and nanostructures. appears just last month.

Igor Suzdalev was the best and loved pupil and follower of Vitaliy Goldanskiy. Since 1997 he was the Russian representative to IBAME, and the Associate Editor of MERDJ.

Being a very intelligent and high-cultured person, Igor Suzdalev was always the life and soul of the party. He was fond of music. The Mossbauer community remembers him as a wonderful piano player who often entertained us at banquets during the ICAME meetings. With his untimely death we lost not only a famous and talented scientist but a wonderful and unique person.

We shall miss Igor Suzdalev and keep blessed memory about him forever. Our thoughts are with his family.

I.S. Lyubutin
