Dear Professor Trautwein, dear Ali:

it gives me a great pleasure to congratulate you, the distinguished member of the international Mossbauer community, on the occasion of your 70th birthday and also to thank you for your exceptional contribution to Mossbauer spectroscopy.

I would not even attempt to enumerate all fields and topics you have touched and, in many cases, initiated so far during your scientific career. Starting in Saarbrucken, in Uli Gonser's group with studies in ferroeletrics and other subjects of this institute, you moved to Lubeck in 1980 to serve at the University as a professor and director of the Institute of Physics but also as the dean of the faculty and later prorector and rector of the university.

Since the late seventies, your molecular orbital calculations leading to reliable Mossbauer hyperfine parameters have opened a new field (the "molecular-orbital computer spectroscopy") that found many applications but also numerous successor groups. One of the first application of your method was the prediction of pure nuclear reflections in YIG in 1983, a finding opening the way to the first observation of nuclear resonance scattering of synchrotron radiation. You applied Mossbauer spectroscopy for a great variety of problems in transition metal chemistry and biochemistry probably the most important subjects being the investigation of the structure-function relation of metal-enzymes and of biomimetic model compounds as well as the investigation of iron-containing deep-sea sediments.

The Mossbauer Community is also thankful to you for your ten-year service (1995-2005) in IBAME, for the 1999 ICAME conference in Garmisch-Partenkinchen that you organized together with Fritz Parak and last but not least for hundreds of your papers and your excellent book "Mossbauer Spectroscopy in Transition Metal Chemistry", 1978 together with Ph. Gutlich and R. Link; 2011 new edition together with Ph. Gutlich and E. Bill.

Dear Ali, I wish you personally, as well as on behalf of IBAME good health, much success and satisfaction in the future.

Respectfully yours,

Denes L. Nagy
Chair, IBAME
