Professor Rudolf L. Mössbauer celebrates his 80th birthday today. On this 
occasion, the following congratulation was sent to him by the 
International Board on the Applications of the Mossbauer Effect.

Dear Professor Mössbauer,

A community identifying itself by your name 'Mössbauer' greets you on your 
birthday. The existence of this community is a mere consequence of your 
discovery fifty years ago, the 'Mössbauer effect', which soon developed into a 
new kind of spectroscopy. We are proud of the important, interesting and useful 
results that we achieved during these fifty years using Mössbauer spectroscopy. 
We believe that this technique is unique and it is our responsibility to 
maintain, develop and pass it to the next generation of scientists.

Decades ago, you turned towards other fields in physics, finding them more 
basic and perhaps more interesting than Mössbauer spectroscopy. Nevertheless, 
you have never lost contact to your congregation. You helped us a number of 
times with new ideas and suggestions.

Today you are eighty. On this occasion the Mössbauer Community wishes you to 
find the full harmony of human existence integrating all your findings and all 
values of your personal life.
