In Memoriam Ferenc Pászti

It is with deepest regret that the KFKI Research Institute for Particle and
Nuclear Physics, Budapest, Hungary (KFKI RMKI) announces the unexpected
passing of

Ferenc Pászti
senior research fellow
who died on 6 January 2009.

Ferenc Pászti was born in Eger, Hungary, on 1 June 1954. He graduated from
the Lajos Kossuth University, Debrecen, Hungary in 1978. Since then, he has
been a member and, later, head of the ion beam analysis group of KFKI RMKI
where he was active until his very last day. He received his Dr. rer. nat.
degree at the Lajos Kossuth University in 1981 and his Candidate of Science
(PhD) degree at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1990.

Ferenc Pászti was a leading authority on ion beam physics. He published more
than 150 papers and chapters of books in this field. His research included
ion implantation, model experiments of plasma-wall interaction in future
fusion reactors, ion-beam investigation of porous materials and their
modifications by ion beams. Furthermore, he achieved fundamental results in
developing ion-beam analysis (RBS, ERD, NRA, including microbeams) using
ions of several MeV energies at numerous laboratories, like Budapest,
Debrecen, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris and Osaka.

Ferenc Pászti introduced several young physicists into the world of ion beam
techniques. During the time they spent together, he gave many valuable
advices to them. They respected and admired him for his high preparedness
and his human qualities.

We shall miss him. Our thoughts are with his family.

The funeral services will be held on Thursday, 15 January 2009 at 15:00 in
the Cemetery of Budakalász at Csalogány Street, Hungary.
