2 Ph.D. Positions in Ion Beam Physics
============================

The Laboratory for Ion Beam Physics is a joint venture between ETH
Zurich and the PSI National Laboratory and plays a leading role in the
development of novel instruments for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
(AMS). It is situated at the ETH Hoenggerberg campus in Zurich,
Switzerland. We are looking for 2 graduate students in the field of AMS
and IBA (Ion Beam Analysis).

1) The Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics is developing a novel AMS system
dedicated to achieve the highest possible measurement accuracy for
radiocarbon analyses. The candidate will conduct systematic studies of
processes, which limit the ultimate measurement accuracy and explore
possibilities to overcome these restrictions. The new opportunities
resulting from the enhanced measurement accuracy shall be demonstrated
in application studies.

2) In the second project a micro/nano-probe for MeV ion beams based on
a novel focussing technique will be developed. The device will be used
for ion beam micro-analysis and modification of surfaces. Applied
techniques will include Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE),
Scanning Transmission Ion Microscopy (STIM), MeV ion beam lithography
and beam-in-air measurements. The graduate student will have to set up
the novel focussing and scanning unit and characterize and optimize the
beam properties. After implementation of the different analysis and
modification techniques the system will be applied to a number of
concrete micro-analytical problems.

A diploma or master's degree in physics is required. The students will
be registered at ETH Zurich. There is a 4 year time limit for the
completion of the work.
