The Astrophysical Origin of Gravitational Wave Sources
The detection of gravitational waves from merging black holes and neutron 
stars has opened a new window on the Universe and established the field of 
gravitational wave astrophysics.
In this talk, I will review how our understanding of the astrophysical origin 
of these mergers has evolved over the past decade. The observed black hole 
mergers show unexpected properties that
are difficult to explain with a single formation scenario. I will focus in 
particular on the possibility that black hole binaries form and merge in the 
accretion disks of supermassive black holes,
where interactions with the surrounding gas can promote binary formation and, 
together with gravitational dynamics, drive binaries toward merger. Finally, 
I will discuss prospects for identifying
black holes at higher masses, including intermediate-mass black holes and 
supermassive black hole binaries, using both current observational techniques 
and future gravitational wave measurements.
