“From the Silicon Transistor to Quantum Metrology: An Unexpected Journey of 
Basic Research"

Kivonat: On 6 October 2026, as the physics community awaits the announcement 
of this year’s Nobel Prize, I will begin by recalling a very different Nobel 
day: the moment, more than four decades ago, when my own life was 
unexpectedly changed by that announcement.

The story, however, began five years earlier, with a very different question. 
While investigating the behaviour of electrons in the silicon field-effect 
transistor—the key device of modern microelectronics—I observed an entirely 
unexpected phenomenon: the quantum Hall effect. What started as basic 
research motivated by the physics of a semiconductor device revealed a new 
and remarkably precise manifestation of quantum mechanics.

The consequences reached far beyond condensed-matter physics. The quantized 
Hall resistance became a fundamental reference for electrical metrology. This 
ultimately contributed to a profound transformation of the International 
System of Units, now founded on fixed values of fundamental constants.

This journey illustrates the unpredictable and often extraordinary path by 
which fundamental science changes our understanding of nature and, sometimes, 
the way we measure it.
