magnetic field sensing using alkali atomsTuesday, 15 September 2026, 10:00,
KFKI Campus, Bldg. 1, 2nd floor, Conference RoomAbstract: Alkali atoms are
promising candidates for highly sensitive magnetic field detection, with
sensitivities reaching tens of fT/√Hz regime [1]. Conventional magnetometry
using alkali-atomic vapor relies on the absorption and transmission of light,
typically using point-detection technique with photodiodes. Despite being
highly sensitive, this approach does not retain information about the spatial
direction of the magnetic field. However, by the spatial shaping of the
polarization of input optical beam, spatial varying atom-light interaction
can be made sensitive to the orientation of the magnetic field. The resulting
spatial dependence of the optical absorption and transmission encodes
information about the magnetic field vector enabling the measurement of
strength and orientation of the magnetic field. This talk is based on
investigating the measurement of the magnetic field strength and orientation
by the interaction of a radially polarized beam with Rubidium atoms at room
temperature.[1] Kitching, John, et al. "Uncooled, millimeter-scale atomic
magnetometers with femtotesla sensitivity." SENSORS, 2009 IEEE. IEEE,
