Abstract:
The lecture will introduce the key activities and technologies at
CERN-MEDICIS, a unique facility dedicated to producing high-purity
radionuclides for medical research and applications. These radionuclides are
essential for next-generation diagnostics and therapies in nuclear medicine,
especially when conventional production methods cannot supply them.
The session will explain how radionuclides are produced at CERN-MEDICIS –
starting from the irradiation of special target materials, followed by
collection and purification. A major focus will be on the mass separation
process, which uses electromagnetic fields to isolate specific isotopes with
very high purity, removing unwanted radioactive by-products that could
interfere with medical use.
The lecture will also highlight recent progress in developing new target
materials that can withstand high radiation and heat while maximizing isotope
production. This includes work with advanced materials such as nanostructured
and refractory compounds.
By combining expertise in nuclear physics, radiochemistry, materials science
and medicine, CERN-MEDICIS plays a key role in advancing nuclear medicine and
supporting the development of personalized treatment strategies.
