“Some new results in Network Science"


Kivonat: Following extensive work on the structure and dynamics of complex networks, research has increasingly moved beyond graphs with static, binary interactions to encompass temporal, multilayer, higher-order, interdependent, and physical networks. In this talk, I will focus on the latter two. a) Interdependent networks are a class of multilayer networks characterized by two types of links: connectivity and dependency, as observed, e.g., in infrastructure and ecological systems. Such networks exhibit heightened sensitivity to disruptions: the percolation transition from a functional state with a giant component to a fragmented state is often discontinuous and occurs via a macroscopic cascade. Hyperscaling arguments indicate that the associated hybrid critical phenomena are characterized by a combination of both mean-field spinodal exponents and d-dimensional corrections. b) Physical networks arise when nodes and links are physical objects - such as in the brain - introducing constraints due to volume exclusion that directly affect network topology. For a simple model, the so-called linear physical network (named for the straight-line geometry of its links), one can define a meta-graph that enables an exact mapping to independent sets, a central concept in graph theory. This mapping makes it possible to analytically determine both the onset of physical constraints and the emergence of jamming, a state in which no additional links can be added due to the constraints.
