Campus, Bldg. 1, 2nd floor, Conference RoomThe concept of dislocations was
introduced in 1934 by Hungarian scientists Orován and Polányi, along with the
British scientist Taylor. Since then, there has been a continuous research
activity in this field in Hungary. In the first part of the talk, some key
results obtained on dislocations in Hungary during the past 50 years are
summarized. Nowadays, the main focus of dislocation research is to develop an
appropriate statistical physics-based continuum theory of dislocations. Since
dislocations form a dissipative system with long-range interactions, and the
dislocation motion is restricted to slip planes, the traditional method of
statistical physics cannot be applied in a straightforward manner. In the
talk, a systematic approach is presented that leads to a phase field-like
