When Work Becomes Identity: The Philosophical Roots of Academic Burnout

Contemporary work culture rests on the implicit promise that professional 
effort is the primary vehicle through which individuals achieve recognition, 
meaning, and self-realization.

This promise has transformed labor from an activity one performs into the 
very substance of who one is. When work goes well, the self thrives; when 
work falters, the self collapses. The consequences for mental health are 
severe, particularly in academic and research environments where the 
boundaries between vocation, identity, and daily performance have become 
almost invisible.

Yet we continue to demand from this impoverished form of work everything that 
a full human life requires. The result is a peculiar form of suffering that 
might be called a depression of meaning: a condition in which people remain 
functionally present and professionally productive while experiencing a 
profound disbelief in the very framework that organizes their effort.

The talk will explore this condition philosophically, examining its roots in 
the historical transformation of work and suggesting that recovery requires 
not better wellness programs or productivity techniques, but a fundamental 
rethinking of the relationship between what we do and who we are.
