CSFK CSI SZEMINÁRIUM / KONKOLY OBSERVATORY SEMINAR
Date: Jun 05 (Thursday) 14:00
Sándor Frey (Konkoly Observatory; Hungary):
Precise astrometry in the service of extragalactic astrophysics
For centuries, astronomy was essentially synonymous with astrometry, i.e.,
measuring positions of celestial objects. Today, we are witnessing a
renaissance in astrometry. Measurements with sub-milliarcsecond precision are
now routinely achieved in both the radio and optical regimes. For many
decades, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) in the radio band was the
only method capable of delivering such high-precision astrometric data for
certain extragalactic objects, particularly radio-loud active galactic nuclei
(AGN). The launch of the Gaia spacecraft in 2013, and its operations
continuing until early 2025, marked a turning point. For the first time, it
became possible to obtain sub-milliarcsecond astrometry for a huge number of
optically relatively faint AGN. This development opened up exciting
opportunities to combine radio and optical astrometric data, enabling new
insights into AGN astrophysics. In this talk, I will review some key results
in this field, with an emphasis on
our own contributions over the past decade or so. I will also highlight
promising directions for future research in applications of precise
astrometric measurements.
