CSFK CSI SZEMINÁRIUM / KONKOLY OBSERVATORY SEMINAR

Date: May 22 (Thursday) 14:00

Viktória Fröhlich (Konkoly Observatory and ELTE; Hungary):
Dynamical effects of type II supernovae

More than five thousand exoplanets are now known, mostly around main-sequence
stars. Interestingly, however, three of the planets in the first exoplanetary
system discovered orbit a pulsar (PSR B1257+12). Since pulsars are formed
during Type II supernova explosions, the original planetary system may become
dynamically unstable. The probability of planetary capture is low, and the
capture of three planets is nearly impossible. In addition, researchers have
discovered hundreds of planets that do not orbit a star, but orbit around the
centre of mass of the Galaxy as rogue planets.
In recent years, our research has focused on modelling the dynamical effects
of SNe II explosions in different systems. We implemented a homologous
expansion model to describe the mass loss of SNe, combined with a
high-precision numerical N-body integrator with variable central mass. We
calculated the perturbations in the orbital elements of the companions and
studied the fate of the systems. The configurations studied included
exoplanets with and without moons, and binary star systems with and without
an exoplanet. Analysis and interpretation of the data showed that Type II SNe
are a highly effective channel for the formation of binary neutron stars,
high peculiar velocity stars and rogue planets, as well as high eccentricity
tidally heated exomoons around such rogue planets.
