CSFK CSI SZEMINÁRIUM / KONKOLY OBSERVATORY SEMINAR

Date: Apr 03, 2025 (Thursday) 14:00

Sudeshna Boro Saikia (University of Vienna)

Stellar driven processes in (exo)planet atmospheres

The evolution and habitability of (exo)planetary atmospheres is strongly tied
to the magnetic activity of the host star. In this talk I will explore the
complex interactions between stellar phenomena and exoplanet atmospheres,
focusing on how stellar X-ray and UV radiation impact atmospheric escape,
chemical processes, and thus shape the atmospheres that are observed by
instruments such as JWST and in the future Ariel and ELT. I will present
recent and ongoing work from my group, which includes upper atmospheric
modeling of rocky planets and moons, and observations of stellar magnetic
activity in the UV.

Characterising exoplanet atmospheres from space-based observations

With the advent of JWST, the characterisation of exoplanet atmospheres from
spectroscopic observations has entered a new era. Within its first few
observational cycles, it has already provided us with a large sample of
varied exoplanet targets, bringing with them new challenges to the methods
used to characterise the nature of their atmospheres. In my talk, I will
provide an overview of the observational techniques and methodology used to
infer the properties of exoplanet atmospheres from spectroscopic
observations, and present my recent work on assessing atmospheric inference
methods in the current state-of-the-art provided by JWST.
