Date: Sep 12 (Thursday) 14:00

Arvind Singh (Physical Research Laboratory; India)

The Fundamental Parameters of Very Low Mass Stars

Very Low-Mass stars (M dwarfs) play a crucial role in exploring the low-mass
end of the main sequence, extending down to the hydrogen burning limit. They
constitute the predominant stellar component of the Galaxy, representing the
majority of baryonic matter in our Galactic system. Additionally, many M
dwarfs are now known to be hosts for exoplanets, including super-Earth
exoplanets. The accurate determination of fundamental parameters for M dwarfs
holds significant implications for stellar and Galactic astronomy and
planetology. Despite their abundance in the Galaxy, M dwarfs pose challenges
as elusive objects, and modelling their photosphere has been a persistent
challenge, involving issues such as molecular opacities and dust cloud
formation. Describing these stars necessitates a robust empirical foundation
or validation. This presentation will explore various methods, strengths, and
limitations in determining the fundamental stellar parameters of Very
Low-Mass stars (M dwarfs).

The seminar will be held live in the Detre hall with audience, but also
streamed online via Zoom. If you are unable to attend the presentation in
person, you can join us via this link
