SZFI SeminarMartina HentschelTechnische Universität Chemnitz, Germany (host:
Penc Karlo)Mesoscopic optics: from ray-wave correspondence to non-Hermitian
photonicsTuesday, 10 September 2024, 10:00, KFKI Campus, Bldg. 1, 2nd floor,
Conference RoomOptical microcavities have proven to be a fruitful mesoscopic
model system in the field of quantum chaos. With typical dimensions on the
micrometer scale, these dielectric microdisk resonators have diameters of
several to several dozens wavelengths, making them perfectly suited to study
interference-induced deviations from the ray picture. However, a (surprising)
correspondence between ray and wave simulation results as well as
experimental measurements - all taking place in different wavelength regimes
- was found, and marked a significant point in their understanding and
efficient, application oriented modeling. While the confinement of light by
total internal reflection, and the corresponding whispering-gallery type
resonances with very high quality factors, are the foundation for their use
as microlaser [1], they remain intrinsically open and non-Hermitian systems.
We illustrate this behavior for a system of two coupled deformed microdisk
resonators [2] and show the emerging chirality and the formation of
exceptional points. Moreover, we will briefly discuss coupling effects in the
far-field emission characteristics of microcavity arrays.[1] Q. J. Wang et
