Dear Colleagues,
This week's seminar will be a little different than usual. Here is why.
After the ELKH -> HUN-REN rebranding it has become apparent that HUN-REN considers engagement with the public to be important. As such, we, the seminar organisers, thought of kickstarting this process by hosting a seminar by someone who is an expert and has a long history in public engagement, outreach, science communication and PR. As such, both scientists and staff from our science communications team are encouraged to attend, either in person or remotely.
This seminar is an experiment, and we hope it will result in curiosity and
discussion/debate.
Thank you for your attention and co-operation.
Sincerely,
Ramon Brasser and Krisztian Vida

Standardising Astronomy Outreach Practices at Research Institutions
The public interest in astronomy is closely intertwined with cultural
connections and the curiosity of ‘wonder and awe’ of humans. Studies show
that astronomers develop an interest in astronomy at a younger age and are
willing to engage with the public [Dang 2015]. However, the availability of
funding and resources for outreach remains low, while those researchers
engaged in outreach are not recognised. How and why should research
institutions needs to position themselves to communicate with the public
effectively? What benefits do researchers gain from doing so? There is a need
to standardise astronomy outreach at the academic level. This talk will
showcase some examples of evidence-based outreach, communication practices,
and synergy between research and outreach.
The seminar will be held live in the Detre hall with audience, but also
streamed online via Zoom. If you are unable to attend the presentation in
person, you can join us via this link
