Cím: Attosecond light pulses and electron pulses

Helyszín: az ELI ALPS konferenciaterme (Szeged, Wolfgang Sandner
utca 3.)
Időpont: 2023. október 18., 14 óra

Az előadás rövid összefoglalója:

In the very first issue of the ELI Courier in 2009 there appeared an
interview [1] with Prof. Gy. Farkas, in which they asked him about
occasionally being called “the father of attophysics”. He modestly declined,
by saying that “I must attribute this romantic denomination to the numerous
years that have passed, rather than to real merit.” Certainly he would have
been very happy to see the recent announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physics
2023 [2], since he had very much appreciated the results of the recent
Laureates. In particular, he had a long-standing, and fruitful collaboration
with Prof. P. Agostini during decades, who has always given a proper credit
to the first proposal in 1992 by Farkas and Tóth [3] for attosecond light
pulse generation.
In the present talk we shall discuss examples from the huge set of Prof.
Farkas’ important results, concerning photon correlations [4], multiphoton
photoeffect [5], Keldish tunneling, above-threshold ionization [6], [7], and
high-harmonic generation [8], with some associated and still open questions.

*The present talk is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Győző Farkas
(1933-2020), on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of his birthday. Prof.
Farkas had significantly contributed to the research on multiphoton processes
and played an important role in the early development of attosecond physics.

Answer to the interviewer by Gy. F. > I must attribute this romantic
denomination to the numerous years that have passed, rather than to real
merit. Actually, back then I began to study experimentally fundamental
phenomena, like the unusually broad widths of above-threshold ionization and
high harmonic generation light spectra. Even for an experimentalist like me,
the reciprocals of these widths immediately suggested the occurrence of
attosecond-duration light and electron pulses. While this idea was mostly
rejected by the community for a decade, later – after its first experimental
verification – it became generally accepted and was declared “evident”. It is
a pleasure to see how this Hungarian-born idea induced an enormous number of
new experiments on atomic-scale electron motion, establishing attoscience.<

Prize in Physics 2023 to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier

study of electron dynamics in matter”. <
