Structural defects in semiconductors as room temperature
quantum devices of nature

One of the biggest achievements of physical sciences in the last decades
is the implementation of various long-lived controllable quantum systems
that can be utilized in novel applications ranging from quantum computing
through quantum communication to quantum sensing. All the different
implementations exhibit some unique properties that provide advantages in
certain applications. Quantum bits and simple quantum devices realized by
structural defects in semiconductors have the ability to remain coherent and
operate above room temperature. In the first part of my talk, I will shortly
review the physics of these fascinating atomic scale solid state systems that
can be found even in natural semiconductor samples, such as in diamond.
The extraordinary properties of these devices can be derived from the
underlying physics of the host material and the structural defect. This
knowledge
helps us today to explore the vast variety of structural defects in
semiconductors
to find new systems with superior properties. In the last part of my talk, I
will
discuss current challenges and possible solutions in the light of my most
recent
research activities.

Best regards,
Andor Kormányos
