Twenty-five years of *ZEKE Spectroscopy*, going strong and beyond:

Zero Electron Kinetic Energy (ZEKE) spectroscopy, based on the pulsed-field
ionisation of very high-*n* ZEKE Rydberg states, has been used for more
than two decades to study molecular cations and non-covalent interactions
in cluster cations. A major application is the highly precise (to a few cm–1)
measurement of dissociation enthalpies that are most significant as
benchmarks for comparison to highest-level “Gold Standard” levels of
theories such as CCSD(T).

When the density of ZEKE states is increased, a molecular plasma will be
formed, which for densities above 1013 cm–3 is expected to become quantum
degenerate. This results in extremely long plasma lifetimes and the
observation of excitation into very low-*n* Rydberg states for which plasma
formation becomes faster than pre-dissociation.
