What is quantum supremacy?
*Mario Szegedy*
Aliyun Quantum Laboratory, Alibaba Group, Bellevue / Rutgers University, USA
Friday, 10 May 2019 13:30, KFKI Campus, Bldg. 1, 2nd floor, Conference Room
From time to time news break out that quantum computers outperform
traditional ones, or in a few months they will. To ensure that we do not
miss out on the crucial moment, Caltech professor John Preskill has
devised a definition to perfectly nail down the above transition. "Quantum
Supremacy" is by definition the state of affairs when some computational
task, however meaningless or meaningful it is, is solved by a quantum
computer in such a manner that the solution cannot be duplicated even with
the world's most powerful super-computer. The opposite of quantum supremacy
is that we can simulate any existing quantum device with some existing
traditional computer. My talk will be about classical simulation of quantum
devices, both from theoretical and practical sides, some history, and also
about the types of problems with which quantum supremacy is hoped to be
achieved.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
