Transport dynamics of complex particles in simple flows

The interactions of complex particles with viscous flows are governed by the shape and mechanical properties of the particles, and these interactions govern their transport properties. Using different microfabrication methods, we obtain a variety of microscopic particles and control not only the particle shape, but also the material properties precisely. The transport dynamics of these particles can then be investigated in representative microfluidic flow geometries.

In this way we specifically address the role of shape, flexibility, and activity on the transport dynamics of different fiber-like particles ranging from polymeric fibers to actin filaments, microhelices, and E-coli bacteria. In particular we show how flexibility modifies particle trajectories and we show that interaction with bounding walls can lead to unexpected dynamics.
