Gravitational waves - The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics

This year the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for the discovery of gravitational waves. The first direct detection was preceded by decades long detector improvements and there are 5 gravitational wave events announced by the LIGO-Virgo community so far. In this talk we summarize the main steps leading to the direct detection of gravitational waves and discuss what we can learn from gravitational wave observations.
