The inclusion of dissipative effects in cosmic fluids has been proposed by several authors as an alternative description of the "dark sector" in Lambda CDM. I will start by briefly reviewing the most common theories of bulk viscosity in GR, highlighting their features and drawbacks. I will then present a global analysis of the background dynamics of such models from a dynamical systems perspective. Despite the presence of early- or late-time exponentially expanding solutions, the role of bulk viscosity as a surrogate for dark energy is questioned. On the other hand, its possible application for describing dark matter is instead pointed out.
