"Collective properties of dislocations"
Dislocations are topological defects responsible for the plastic
deformation of crystalline materials. Since the dislocation motion
is dissipative and restricted in the slip plane, and the dislocation-
dislocation interaction is long ranged, the statistical properties
of dislocations cannot be modeled by classical statistical physics
techniques.
In the first part of the talk it is introduced shortly what are the
current experimental and numerical developments on the field. After
this, it is explained in details how a continuum theory of dislocations
can be derived from the equation of motion of individual dislocations.
Finally, problems related to dislocation avalanches are discussed.
