Abstract:

In a Josephson junction, the non-superconducting weak link connecting the two superconductors can sustain a finite supercurrent via spin-singlet Cooper pairs penetrating the non-superconducting material. However, if the weak link consists of a ferromagnetic material, this supercurrent decays in only a few nanometers because the presence of magnetism is disruptive for spin-singlet Cooper pairs. In our research, we investigated - both theoretically and experimentally - the possibility of generating a longer-ranged supercurrent through a magnetic material by converting the magnetically sensitive spin-singlet Cooper pairs into spin-triplet Cooper pairs that are robust against magnetism. This conversion is possible for example by introducing non-collinear magnets, helical magnets, or magnetic domain walls into the weak link.
