Földes István

The Bleiner group (www.iap.unibe.ch) at the University of Bern
(Switzerland) runs plasma-based sources of coherent and incoherent shortwavelength
radiation ("XUV") for micro/nano-scale imaging. Within the COST
Action MP1208 (www.cost.eu) the group has funding for a full-time
Doctorate (Ph.D. in Physics) on
"X-ray Imaging of Plasma Shocks"
Your project:
In conventional (amplitude) X-ray plasma imaging, one uses
energetic X-rays that can penetrate into thick targets.
However a poor contrast, as due to a factor of 3 matter
compression, hinders the capturing of second shocks, shock
reflections, and fine structures. Your results using phasecontrast
imaging will be compared to those using the
traditional technique. Your optical set-ups for imaging
warm/dense plasmas generated by an intense laser pulse,
as during shock ignition experiments (Fig.), will expand the
fundamental understanding, thus being the platform for
international publications.
Your profile:
You hold a degree in physics with excellent grades, and hands-on experience in any of the
following fields: optics, X-rays, spectroscopy, lasers, plasmas, fluid dynamics,
thermodynamics. You have passion for laboratory work and are creative. You are a teamplayer
and are ready to help your colleagues and learn from them. You are ready to travel for
experiments at international facilities in Japan, Canada, France, USA (for visa issues
European applicants are given priority). You have excellent spoken/written skills in English,
and knowledge of German or French. Linux familiarity is required. You are a skilled user of
common data processing software (e.g. Matlab) and can perform own simulations to prepare
the experiments.
Applications:
Application is now possible until the position is filled. Starting date is 1 April 2014 or upon
mutual agreement. Please submit only PDFs as a single ZIP namely: cover letter, one-page
statement of interest, CV with biographical data, publications list, transcript of university
examinations, copy of certificates. Two references should be provided with full contact
details. Applications are sent to: Prof. Dr. Davide Bleiner, University of Bern (IAP), ExWI A81
(Laser), Sidlerstrasse 5, CH-3012, Bern, Switzerland. E-mail bleiner AT iap.unibe.ch,
